Chocolate Grill-O-Nafa

Similar to your usual Chocolate grilled sandwich but soo much more better. This one is coated with Kunafa dough and uses soft sweetened bread which is filled with warm melted chocolate.

This can also be referred to as a ‘Kunafa French Toast’ but I’d rather stick to Grill-O-Nafa because it sounds more quirky and my awesome followers came up with that name a year back, which makes it so much more special to me!

Filling Alternative: You could also try this out by stuffing it with arabic cheese instead of chocolate to give it an authentic Kunafa taste. Originally, people use Nabulsi or Akkawi cheese but adding a layer of fresh cream and another layer of shredded mozzarella works just as well.

I personally love mine best with chocolate, and I prefer adding a large block of a chocolate bar without chopping it or sometimes even spreadable chocolate.

This is a really quick breakfast or dessert idea , which hardly takes time to prepare, and tastes spectacular. Remember to have it warm, when it’s still fresh.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of bread

  • 1 ¼ cup kunafa dough

  • 2 Tbsp Ghee + more for frying

  • 1 egg

  • 2-3 Tbsp sugar (to taste)

  • ½ cup milk

  • Chocolate bar or spread (as needed)

Directions

  • In a medium sized bowl, add Kunafa dough and ghee. Then, using your fingers ensure the ghee is rubbed all over the dough evenly. Shred the dough into smaller pieces if it’s too long.
  • In another bowl, whisk the egg and sugar together followed by mixing in the milk. Set aside.
  • Using two slices of bread, stuff chocolate of your choice in between and make a sandwich.
  • Heat a frying pan with ghee and while that’s warming up, carefully soak the sandwich in the prepared milk mixure, and then coat one side of the sandwich with Kunafa dough pressing it well to the bread.
  • Add the Kunafa-coated side down on the frying pan, and while that is grilling, add and press the Kunafa dough to the upper side of the sandwich. Flip and fry both sides until golden brown in colour.
  • Remove from heat and enjoy your delicious, chocolatey Grill-O-Nafa!

Notes

  • Eliminate sugar from the recipe if you like it better with just the sweetness of the chocolate.
